Overheard

Eli: "Mom is Jesus in the night?"
Me: " What do you mean?"
Eli: "Does he fly in the night in a rocket? Up like in space?"
"Me: "Well he's not in a rocket but I think he's up in heaven."
Eli: "Well, maybe we should get a telescope then we can see him and find him up there."

Eli: " Mom, Alden and Kolten were tipping my chair back."
Me: " Was that fun or scary?"
Eli: "Scary. And I asked them to stop but they wouldn't."
Me: "So, what did you do? Hit them?"
Eli: "No! Maybe I could tell them to freeze!"
Me: "Like freeze Alden?"
Eli: "And Kolten. That's what Diego does."

"Surrender"

Overheard

I've been writing down things Eli says for a while. Just cause he says so many funny things. It's partly the age and partly him I think.

"Surrender"
Some of my favorites:

"SURRENDER" - always yelled at the top of his lungs (which is annoying)

"tailnippers" - nail clippers

"well that's exactly what I'm going to do"

"Oliberry" - Oliver

"i think he needs mommy milk"

"i'm totally dressed now"

"i want to watch piderman but not the bad one, only the good one" (he never says the s for spiderman)

"pppppa-please"

"ife" - knife

motorbicyle - motorcycle

"commudered" - computer

"yea I fixed it" (how) "with the button on top"

"can I have a mixtery" (all my kids say that instead of mixture but only when talking about cereal)

Whenever we try to get him to say the letter sound properly in a word he always says it just fine but then goes on saying the word all funny.

And this conversation goes on pretty much EVERY DAY about 5 times a day (or more) and frankly drives me bonkers.

"can i watch a movie on the computer" (no)
" can i watch on the tv?" (no)
"dad's iphone?" (no)
"can I go to James' house?" (not right now)
"can I play with Talan?" (not right now)
"can I play with Roman?" (not right now)
"can I play with Mason?" (not right now)
"well then can i watch a movie on the computer"
and on and on....

He keeps us on our toes in many many ways. Good thing he's so cute!

Overheard

This child is so funny.
DSC_2279

On Christmas Eve he was kind of grouchy. He didn't want to leave Grandma's house to go home to bed.
To which I, of course, replied that we had to go home to bed so Santa could come cause he only brings toys to good kids.
Eli: "Well I don't like Santa."
Me: "Why not?"
Eli: "And he doesn't like me."
Me: "Yes he does"
Regan: " He likes all kids"
Eli: "Nope. Not me. He doesn't like little boys."
Me: "How do you know that?"
Eli: "He told me"
Me: "When?"
Eli: "2:30."
Alden: "Yeah, well where were you?"
Eli: "In the North Pole" (said in a tone indicating obviously)
Alden & Lucy start laughing.
Me: "Eli he likes you and he'll bring you some presents tonight."
Eli: "I don't want them. You can give them to Oliver."
Me: "What about the train set you asked for?"
Eli: "Our baby can have them. I don't want to go to bed."

And he CAN NOT stop kissing everyone. But especially Oliver. I am worried it is going to scar the poor child.

As we were walking in today at lunch time after picking up Alden from school.

Lucy: "Hey, who smells like Grandma Davis?"

Mom: " What does Grandma Davis smell like?"

Alden: "Potatoes!"

Mom: "Grandma Davis smells like potatoes?"

Alden: "Well she IS a gardener!"

Mom: "I don't think Grandma smells like potatoes"

Lucy: " I think she just smells like an old lady"

Mom: "What does that smell like?"

Lucy: "ummmm bread and.... potatoes?"

Old Fashioned Potato Salad and goofy kids

A few wanted the recipe so here it is...

Old Fashioned Potato Salad
from the Barefoot Contessa at home (one of my very favorite cookbooks!)
3 lbs small red potatoes
salt
1 cup good mayo
1/4 cup buttermilk or milk
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
2 Tbsp whole grain mustard
1/2 cup chopped fresh dill (fresh is best - but can use dried stuff)
freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup medium diced celery
1/2 cup small diced red onion

Place potatoes and 2 Tbsp salt in a large pot of water. Bring to boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, until the potatoes are barely tender when pierced with a knife. Drain the potatoes in a colander, then place the colander with potatoes over the empty pot off the heat and cover with a clean dry towel. Leave potatoes to steam for 15 to 20 minutes, until tender but firm.
Meanwhile in a small bowl, whisk together the mayo, buttermilk, mustard's, dill, 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper. Set aside.
When potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut them into quarters or halves. Place cut potatoes in a large bowl and pour enough dressing over them to moisten. As the salad sits you may need to add more dressing. Add the celery, red onions and 2 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper. Toss well, cover and refrigerate for a few hours to allow the flavors to blend well.

Just try cooking the potatoes like she says. It makes them better. instead of those falling apart ones you get in most potato salads. I really like them this way. And I love this potato salad.

The fruit salad was as natural as the day it grew. (sans pesticides :) ) I like to make one with lemon pie filling cooked and cooled and mixed with cool whip - but I was feeling just the freshness of the fruit for dinner so that was what we had. And my kids are more likely to eat it with nothing on it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we went to a playdate at a friends house. Lucy was still quite worried about people seeing her eye, so she wore her sunglasses. I over heard this conversation:
M: "so those are nice glasses"
L: "So one night I went to bed and woke up and then walla (voila) I had a huge eye."
M: "Do you like that dress"
L: Looks at her like hello I just told a serious story here. But gets no response so just puts them back on and moves onto something else.

Last week:
Alden: "Mom did you know there are some people who are fat and some who are tall and some who are short and some who are skinny."
Me: "Yep. God made people in all shapes and sizes"
Alden: "Well if you are short you are fat and if you are tall then you are skinny"
Lucy: "Well mom's tall and fat"
Me: "HEY that's not nice to say. In fact that kind of hurts my feelings"
Lucy: "why?"

And Eli calls me "BUM" not "mum" but "Bum". he walks around the house yelling "BUM, are you? BUM are you?"

I've recommitted myself to exercise as of late thanks to the kids. Thanks guys... I guess.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

And the bean wreath that I was talking about is here at Dana Made it.

And any of you are welcome to come and eat any time :)

Random + Overheard

Me: "Do you want another pancake?"
Lucy: "Hey I know a Sarah! There's one in my class."
Me (confused at how she made that jump): "Did you know that's Kenzie's mom's name, Sarah?"
Lucy: "So there's TWO Sarahs??"
Me: "Yeah there's lots, it's a popular name."
Lucy: "I know why, cause it rhymes with Syrup."
DSC_2337
Lucy: "I've got 2 spences"
Me: "You've got what?"
Lucy: "2 spences, see?" (Holding out two nickels to me)
Me: "Lucy, that's 10 CENTS, cause each one is worth 5 CENTS each?"
Lucy: "No i've got 2, 2 spences!"

------------------------------------------------------
Alden: "Mom, take my picture like this..."
So i take it.
Me: "Why?"
Alden: "I just thought it would be cool!"

Overheard

On the way home from our quick stop at the grocery story after dropping Alden off to school:

Lucy: "Mom, how much do those candy spencers cost?"
Mom: "Candy what?"
Lucy "Candy spencers, you know or toy spencers?"
Mom: "Do you mean those candy Dispensers that you put a quarter in and turn the little nobbly thing?"
Lucy: "Yeah, those. How much do they cost?"
Mom: "umm, I have no idea why?"
Lucy:" Cause I want one in my room."
Mom: "hee hee, oh honey, people don't really just have those in their houses."
Lucy: "Well when I grow up I'm gonna have one in MY house."
Probably driven on because every time we go to any grocery story my kids ask for the candy and/ or toys in those things. And we rarely ever do it. Today she didn't even ask, but I guess seeing them still stuck out in her mind :) And yes I know there are little ones you can buy.

This and that

Check out this and enter. :)

I'm looking for something ever so clever to write about.... but it seems as though my mind is in a million places. And apparently none of them are clever. :)

Instead I'll share some cute things Lucy has prayed lately.
"please bless me to use the potty and be a big girl" (hasn't helped so far)
"please bless that we'll eat our food"
"please bless that I won't hit people"
"please bless mom and dad and Eli and Alden and Lucy" (always so cute when she says that)
"please thank you for puppy and the lights and my blankets and my books" (she was listing every thing in her eye sight area)
"please give us safety while we drive"
"please help me to be kind and use my words"
"please bless the food to be good" (I guess my cooking needs heavenly help)

There were some other really funny ones I can't remember. But one thing she said after the prayer Alden was laughing and he announced "Lucy your nuts. You can't pray for that." (but I can't remember what it was.)

I've got a list of things to do (and a few of them I keep skipping over and doing the others... do you do that?)

EDITED to add......
Just when you think you have nothing to blog about your three year old's visiting neighbor friend spray paints your daughters arms and feet white (along with the sandbox and the walls of the house and some rocks...) during your quick shower.

(this is AFTER the serious scrubbing in the bathroom sink....)

Alden: "mom are we going to a public library?"
M: "yes"
A: "Do they have public movies?"
M: "All movies are public."
Dad:" Alden do you know what public means?"
A: "No"
D: "Public means anyone can use it."
A: "Do they have public car transporters?"
D: "No"
A: "Hey mom, look we're coming up to a public swimming pool!"

Last night during Family Home Evening about love Dad asked a question about love.
Dad: "Is there anyone we aren't supposed to love?"
Lucy: "We aren't supposed to love strangers."
Alden: (said while pointing his hand at her like a gun) "Lucy, that's totally right!"

i love recording what my kids say. It's so funny.
And i love using it on scrapbook pages...

I found this

laying outside Alden's door yesterday when his friend Sam was over to play.
Can you figure out what he means??
Alden's Sign on his door

No girls. No 3 year old's, no 1 year old's and no moms (check out the belly on me in that top picture..... seems I need to lose a little weight..... (Lucy drew the x on the 5 to get back at him.... )
No, its' Not the nicest, but quite creative on this part!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do love getting into the Canadian Scrapbooker. It's a great magazine and I've been excited every time it's happened! You should check out all the Canadian Talent in it!

oh and Adrienne, you've won the magazine (which works well since I have some girlie scrapbooking stuff I've been meaning to mail you since you had your little one) so I'll pop them all the in mail together. BUT email me your address again just to make sure at steedr(at)gmail(dot)com

Lots of comments on that one... I should offer to give stuff away more often!
There will be more stuff to give away soon. Including a photo session!
And perhaps something sewn or made....

Carseats and Superpowers

DSC_0036_2
A: "Hey mom, did you know I have sweet skills?"
M: "No, I didn't"
A: "well I do, sweet feet and arm skills."
DSC_0029_2

Questions you asked yesterday....

And for the car seats.
Lucy's three tickets
1. Shoulder straps were not tight enough - he could fit in three fingers
2. the seat belt holding in her car seat wasn't tight enough (you are supposed to kneel on the seat and then buckle it in - he did it to show me....)
3. the top anchor wasn't hooked into the seat
Alden's
1. He had slipped the car seat from off his shoulder (I am always telling him not to do that.... but he does anyways)
Eli's:
1. Shoulder straps were not tight enough - he could fit in two and a half fingers
2. the seat belt holding in his car seat wasn't tight enough

You are only supposed to be able to fit in two fingers, not three and certainly not two and a half.....

Regan is applying in BC and Saskatchewan and Alberta. Mostly rural places but some urban too. Our first choice is Rural Alberta South based out of Lethbridge. But we'll see what happens. He is off to Vancouver tomorrow night for the BC ones.

And then we get to have some time with him for 10 days.
Which we are badly in need of.

Overheard: Alden's View on Christmas

This picture is Santa. And what he wants for Christmas. It is a transport truck.

Alden: "Mom, I want Batman little people for Christmas."
Mom: "I don't think there is such a thing."
Alden: "MOM, silly, Santa has elves that can make it."

Alden: "Mom, I want a new bed for Christmas."
Mom: "um, that's to big"
Alden: "Don't worry mom, 40 Elves can make it."

Alden:" Mom, I want one of these and these and these for Christmas" (while pointing to pretty much one of everything in the Toys R Us flyer)
Mom: "All that is too expensive."
Alden: "Don't worry, Santa's elves can make them for me. It'll take about 49 of them."

Overheard and Photo Talk

Photos are getting posted on my photo blog quite frequently lately.
I've got 2 weddings, 2 babies, 2 family shoots to edit.
Plus I'm doing two family shoots (one with twin girls - HOW FUN!) on Saturday.
I wanted to spend all my free time today editing photos, but I spent 5 hours at Canadian Tire being really annoyed with their service.

Eli was with me and was a dream, as usual!

He's such a good baby!
And so kissable!

On a much happier note... a little conversation with Alden:
A:"Hey mom, can I have some chores?"
M: "Sure, do you know what chores are?"
A:" No"
M: "Well, you have some chores, like cleaning your room, clearing your dishes off the table, but I could add more!"
A: "Okay!"

Sam comes to the door and both Alden and Lucy run to the door.
Sam: "Can Alden play?"
Alden: "Sorry Sam, I've got to do chores. Just the dishes, but don't worry, I'll only do one! hahaha."

What a quirky kiddo I've got!
