Kids books

So Alden is in Grade one right?
And he had his first library day at school.
And he picks out this book.

Of all the books in the library he picks out this.
And he wants me to read it to him as a bedtime story.
And every page he is fascinated with the things on it.
Electromagnetic waves.
Musical Instruments
X-Rays and cameras.
Electricity.
He soaks it all up, as I stumble across the words.

For a while he was having us read this encyclopedia book (i think called How things work) that my mom bought him.

It is interesting to me that a kid who is turning seven likes to sit and hear this kind of stuff. That he'd rather sit and listen to how things work and learn about how things work. Random things like washing machines, car engines, the internet, telephones and sound waves.

Yet this is the same kid who, while I was trying to get him to read me a phonics Dora book to me tonight says "so am I reading this or you, cause I don't want to?"

I think he is going to be fascinated with so many things. As soon as he learns to read. He is getting there. Each day we are working and so is his grade one teacher. And soon he will be reading.

And shortly after that, who knows.... maybe he will be reading about Electromagnetic waves all on his own.

Ah, the good old days! I remember sitting up at night, under the covers with a flashlight, reading the Encyclopedia Britannica at night, listening for mom or dad to come up the stairs. I read the whole 26 volume set, not every article, but every page got turned. When I mething interesting, I stopped and read it. The world is full of exciting things to explore!

I love love LOVE that! Actually I think my brother was big into that stuff. He often made little things that worked and used little batteries to turn on lights and it was pretty cool!

I was so amazed how quickly Hadley caught on to reading after starting Grade 1. I am sure it will be the same for Alden.

Now that is a big-kid book! Carter was so excited that he got to bring books home this year.

Who is Alden's teacher?

hehe, just think about how many things YOU will learn too! My kids are reading sponges and are fascinated by all kinds of weird things. I wouldn't be surprised if Lucy teaches herself to read just to keep up to her big brother!

I didn't know you were a Blogger?! Is it okay if I add ya to my list? I also didn't know that you're a shutter-bug - great pics!

Hahaha - sounds like he's going to be a math and sciencey type of guy! Perhaps a future engineer??? :)

He's a boy - and boys love non-fiction, want a purpose for their reading and are so different than girls! I'm sure your Mom has lots of good advice about this topic. In my humble opinion - it doesn't matter one bit WHAT he reads, it's most important THAT he reads. Enjoy this special time of discovery and wonder!
